Course Objectives:
This course traces the history and development of Western Art Music from its roots in the Middle Ages to the present (depending on how far we get). We will focus on historical eras, general stylistic traits, and specific pieces in an attempt to gain an understanding of how the music of Western Europe developed over time.

General Class Assignments:
Reading, listening, and some analysis will be the primary means of study. Specific assignments will be made on a week-to-week basis. Students are responsible for having engaged the assigned material prior to class and, when appropriate, bring additional insight and/or material to the class.

The "Big" Assignments:

For both projects, proper writing style and scholarly "rules" and conventions about citations, quotations, etc. apply.

Grading:
