John M. Long Endowed Humanities Scholarship

This scholarship was established to honor John M. Long, former Dean of the College of Arts and Humanities, and is intended to promote the education of deserving full-time students majoring in the humanities (English, foreign languages, history, speech communication, philosophy, or religion) at Eastern Kentucky University. The annual scholarship will be in the amount of $500.00 applied to tuition and fees, with $250 applied to each semester of the year of the award. Full-time students at EKU majoring in one of the above listed programs with at least a 3.0 GPA or who can demonstrate scholarly accomplishments and potential may be considered for the award. Recipients of the scholarship are eligible to apply and be considered for a second or third year’s scholarship. Students meeting these criteria may nominate themselves to be nominated by a faculty member.

Students wishing to be considered for the John M. Long Humanities Scholarship should follow this procedure:

1. Write a letter of application outlining the characteristics they believe qualify them for the award; the letter should include the names of two faculty references.
2. Request the faculty references to submit letters to the scholarship selection committee.
3. Submit the letter with the attached completed application form.
4. Include with the application letter and form a vita covering academic and other experiences showing their scholarly accomplishments and potential. These experiences might include classes taken, papers or projects completed, publications or presentations, or other experiences related to the above fields.
5. Write an essay on the topic “The Value of the Humanities.” This essay might
focus on the role the humanities have played in the student’s own life or on the contributions of the humanities in local, national or international culture. This essay should be approximately 300-500 words in length; it should be typed and double spaced.

Faculty members who nominate a student for the scholarship award should notify the student that he/she is being nominated and ask the student to complete the application process (send the application form, vita, and essay to the committee.)

These materials should be sent to the John M. Long Scholarship Selection Committee. For information about the contact person and due date for the Long Scholarship, contact the College of Arts and Sciences at (859) 622-1405.
