COURSE TITLE: Principles of ManagementPREREQUISITES: ACC 201, 202, and ECO 230 with a grade of "C-" or better in each course; Junior standing (at least 60 hours) with an overall GPA of 2.0. You may not take this and MGT 301

REQUIRED TEXT: Management, 6th Edition (2003) by Richard Daft. Mason, Ohio: Thomson/South-Western Pub.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: Management principles with emphasis on organization theory and behavior, human resources and diversity, communications, production/operations management and quality issues, business ethics, development of management thought, management in the global arena, and management careers.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course is designed to introduce non-business students to the fundamental principles of management and the various functions and roles of the manager. Specific objectives include:
1. To introduce students to the functions and processes inherent in management and to provide a basic theoretical background in the management of people and processes within modern formal organizations;2. To enhance students' ability to conceptualize and analyze situations at work using the theoretical framework provided by the course:
3. To provide students with opportunities to practice/apply management theories and concepts.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS: Students are required to demonstrate knowledge and application of management principles by regularly participating in classroom discussion and taking examinations. Exams and other assignments will test student knowledge of topics listed in a later section of the syllabus and will require students to think analytically, apply knowledge to specific situations, relate topics and models to their own careers and communicate professionally both orally and in writing.
COURSE EVALUATION: the final course grade will be determined based upon the following criteria:
4 Exams (100 points each) 400 pts.In Class Participation and Leadership 50 pts.
Total Points 450 pts.
Grading scale: >90%=A, 89% - 80%=B, 79% - 70%=C, 69% - 60%=D, <60%=FStudents making below a 70% on an exam will be required to make a
timely appointment with the
instructor during his office hours to go over the exam and pursue
methods to enhance class
performance.
USE OF STUDENTS' MATERIALS: the professor reserves the right to retain for pedagogical reasons either the original, or a copy, of any student's test, written assignment, paper, video, or similar project, for the class. Student's names will be deleted from any retained items.
ATTENDANCE POLICY: Students are expected to attend all classes. Although this class is basically taught with a lecture format, examinations will largely be drawn from materials presented in class. An inability to consistently attend class will negatively impact on test scores. Regular attendance is a major component of "In Class Participation and Leadership". Make ups for exams will be given only for legitimate, documented institutional reasons. The instructor will be the final judge of what makes up a legitimate excuse.
