To write a formal letter = to the=20 producer of a popular science fiction movie describing the correctness = of the=20 physics shown in that movie.

2. Students=20 are to choose a popular science fiction movie from a list, watch it, and = critique the physics used in that movie.

3. The=20 critique will be written in a form of a letter to the producers of the = chosen=20 movie. The letter will = eventually=20 be sent to the producers.

4. The=20 letters will be graded on form, punctuation, grammar, relevance and = correctness=20 of physics ideas, and ease of reading.

Reflection:

=20 Finding a reason=20 to write in a physics class is a difficult task. Physics class is usually made = up of=20 formulas, graphs, and numbers. =20 However, physics teachers are always saying that the reason one = should=20 learn it is that physics is all around us each and every day. I figured that the best way = for students=20 to see physics was to use something they watch and talk about quite = often:=20 movies. Science fiction = movies are=20 notorious for =93bending=94 and sometimes even =93breaking=94 the laws = of physics for a=20 good show. I believe that = perusing=20 a popular science fiction movie for these =93bends=94 and =93breaks=94 = is a great way=20 for students to see that physics really do matter. Outlining these physics = problems in=20 movies (and even pointing out good physics in movies when it happens) in = a=20 letter to the movie=92s producer is a great way to accomplish both the = goal of=20 showing the relevance of physics and the goal of teaching students the = proper=20 way to write. Writing = about the=20 physics in movies will undoubtedly reinforce the physics content that = they have=20 previously learned. It = will also=20 help prepare them to write properly when they have to out in the real = world.=20
