Confirmation through Conflict: America and the Elixir of = Social=20 Change

Background: =20 As we approach Unit Six, =93Living in Turmoil,=94 the class will = be=20 publishing a collection of scholarly articles, short stories, poems, or=20 narratives on the period of time from 1954 to = 1975. The collection will = be=20 entitled Confirmation through=20 Conflict: America and the = Elixir of=20 Social Change. The = collection=20 will be bound and sold by the students of 2^nd Block U. S.=20 History. Proceeds will be = donated=20 to the local Garrard County Historical Society.

Assignment: =20 Collection will be written entirely by students of 2^nd = Block=20 U. S. History Class. Each = student=20 will be responsible for producing a piece for the=20 collection.

Directions: =20 Each student will choose one of the following=20 assignments:

SCHOLARLY = ARTICLE:

Student will choose one of the = following=20 topics and produce a scholarly article, using at least 5 documented = sources and=20 appropriate documentation (to be discussed later). Articles will be at least five = pages,=20 double spaced, plus a reference page. =20 Appropriate topics include (but are not = limited

to): = the Civil=20 Rights Movement in Garrard County

and/or Central=20 Kentucky, the effects of integration on =

public schools in Kentucky, the national impact of=20

Kentucky civil rights = activists, or=20 the New Frontier and the Great Society=92s effects on rural/urban = Kentucky.

SHORT = STORY/POEM:

Student will write short story (at = least five=20 pages).

All stories will feature either a = real figure=20 or incident from Kentucky 20^th century = civil rights=20 history. If story = features a real=20 figure, then setting/plot must be fictionalized. If story features =

an actual event, then characters must = be=20 fictionalized. Student = must utilize=20 no less than four documented sources in the completion of this = assignment.

If student chooses the poetry = option, student=20 MUST

PRODUCE TWO POEMS. One poem will focus upon = specific=20 individual or incident from Kentucky = civil=20 rights history, the second will focus upon the impact of the civil = rights=20 struggle in Kentucky or Garrard = County. Student must use no less than = two=20 documented sources per poem.

NARRATIVE:

Student will interview at least = three people=20 who at least of high school age during the period from 1954-75. Student will create a = narrative of no=20 less than five pages based upon these interviews. Acceptable topics for = interview include,=20 but are not limited to, the following: =20 integration, civil rights demonstrations, Kennedy assassination, = 1969=20 moonwalk.
