Writing Assignment:
We have recently finished a unit studying South
Asia. One of the
problems we studied in this region of the world was that of deforestation
because of slash-and-burn farming and related it to the urban expansion
occurring in Richmond.
How has this knowledge affected you and what does it make you feel? You have the choice of writing one of
the following: a letter to the editor or a proposal to your local
government.
For a letter to the editor, you must write a letter expressing your
opinion on the expansion and urban growth occurring in Richmond for publication
in the Richmond Register. Either
you must be in favor of the expansion or against it; you may not sit on the
fence. Be sure to give three
reasons why you feel the way you do and also give two
supporting statements as justification of your reasons. Appropriate supporting justification
would include statements that utilize knowledge gained through the unit of study
and that relate what is going on in Richmond to what you have studied in other
cultures.
If you choose to write a proposal to your local government, you must
clearly state what your proposal is and it must pertain to urban expansion. Options would include proposals to
protect land or to build a mall complex or a subdivision. You must give three reasons why this
proposal would be good for the city of Richmond.
Call upon your knowledge of economics and interdependence and give two
supporting justifications for each reason.
Good answers will make use of knowledge gained in the unit of study and
will relate the situation of Richmond to what you have studied.
This assignment will be scored based on how
fully you manage to answer the question.
Points will be deducted if the directions and
mandated reasoning and justification statements are not present. Failing grades will be given to those
that either do not fulfill the assigned task or that
are irrelevant to the task at hand.
Three reasons, each with two
justifications equals nine requested statements. Relevance to topic will be worth one
point for a total of ten points.
