EKU’s chapter of Pi Omega Pi won first place in national competition at the National Business Education Association’s 2008 convention in San Antonio last month.

Pi Omega Pi, the National Business Teacher Education honor society, is the oldest student organization on EKU’s campus, established in 1935. EKU students have placed in the top 10 chapters for the past seven years, winning second place last year. The top five chapters in this year’s competition, which included 40 active members, were: Alpha Beta, Eastern Kentucky University; Beta, Northwest Missouri State University; Psi, University of Wisconsin-Whitewater; Zeta Eta, Kansas State; and Alpha Pi, Mississippi State.

To participate in the year-long competition, EKU’s Pi Omega Pi members completed three projects, including the following: National Project: Creating an instructional module to help business and marketing teachers develop students’ soft skills in business classrooms. Community Project: Giving “How Can You Increase Your Pay Day?” presentations at five regional high schools in counties surrounding EKU to promote business and marketing classes at the secondary and post-secondary level. Local Project: Showcasing excellence in Pi Omega Pi through a presentation and poster session during EKU’s 17th Annual Honors Program Thesis Presentations. In addition to the projects, Pi Omega Pi members wrote four articles for publication in the national Pi Omega Pi newsletter, “Here and There”: “Improving Literacy Skills with Simple Techniques,” “Business Educators: Can We Be Leaders In Critical Thinking?”, “What’s New in the Desktop Publishing Classroom?” and “Practical Experience Adds Value to Teaching.”

EKU’s Pi Omega Pi officers are Treva Macy, Ravenna, president; Jordan Marcum, Richmond, vice president; Hollyann Colson, London, secretary; Jane Radford, Somerset, treasurer; and Natalie King, Lancaster, historian.
